" 101 wind pumps in MauritaniA "

Sustainable development implies to use  renewable energies in order to protect  the environment and to insure social and economical development.

But significant implementations and regional level are very few, especially in less developed countries where the needs are very important.

From this point of view, the ALIZES programme, " 101 wind pumps in MauritaniA ", is a major project : 

• geographical concentration of one hundred of wind pumps in the region of Trarza, in the southwest of Mauritania

•  supply of drinking water  to more than  20 000 people

• large involment of communities at regional and local level : the villages participating to the programme have invested about 15% of the total cost. Now they take in charge the maintenance and provisions in the framework of mutual funds ("Nassim")

• close cooperation with State Departments, especially with the Direction of Energy

•  local manufacturing by the private company DEYLOUL thanks to a  transfer of technology with  ECOLAB (ex.PONCELET), french manufacturer of the OASIS wind pump.

An example for others

In 1993, on the basis of the results from MAURITANIA,  ESPACE EOLIEN REGIONAL has performed, with support from Nord-Pas-de-Calais regional council, a feasibility study in the northwest of SEnEgal. This study has been the first step of the  Alizes-Senegal programme.

In Mauritania, wind energy is also used for electricity generation in the Trarza, and other regions (the Hodhs and Adrar).
