Villager hydraulics in Senegal

In a Sahelan country such as Senegal, the drinking water supplying is an essential aspect of the development.

It is traditionally made from wells but in the valley of the river Senegal, the river water is often used directly, especially between Dagana and Saint-Louis, where the water table is salt.

The villager hydraulics national policy aims at providing a water of high purity for all. It can be a simple well in an area where there is a low density of population, a sinking equipped with a manual pump or with a thermal pump or with local networks when the population is too important.

The Alizés cooperation with the State Departments

The cooperation of a non-governmental project such as Alizés with the State Departments allows to :

• Surmount the unfavourable apriorisms towards the wind pumps (there were negative experiences in the country)
• Equip with wind pump only the villages which will not benefit in short term from the connection to the grid.
• Favour the results spreading beyond the project.

This cooperation is defined by :

• The Direction of Energy association to the preliminary studies.
• The forming of a piloting-committee regrouping, besides the non-governmental organizations, the Directions of Energy and Hydraulics and the CERER (Study and Research Center on the renewable energies of the University of Dakar).

The piloting committee takes the strategic decisions (financial contribution of the villages, selection’s criteria).
