The needs

The Senegal river forms a natural frontier between Senegal and Mauritania. In this valley, there are many villages in development which use irrigated agriculture to grow crops. River water is used by more than 80 villages downstream for human needs but the quality is very bad : the river is often used as a washhouse ans also for sewage. Furthermore, the transport of this water is a hardship for children and women.

Look at the results in 3 villages before to be equipped by Alizés (pdf, french)

To improve this situation, the installation of  pumping and treatment stations is therefore an innovative action. Each installation includes :

  • 2 pumps : one for pumping of river water and one for discharging into the treatment system and the distribution network. These pumps used wind energy  or solar energy or electricity (from Manantali dam) according the choice of the village ; Alizes program pay the cheap solution..
  • a treatment system : decanting, filtration and chlorinating (Aquassistance system)
  • in the village : storage in a water tower and distribution to the public fountains and to the private taps by gravity feed.

To pick up water in the river : a hardship.

The several stages of the water treatment
  1. Flocculation and Decanting during 12 or 24 hours of the river water in 2 water tanks (2 x 10 m3).
  2. Filtration with 2 sand  filters
  3. Chlorinating with a volumetric measure pump
  4. Storage  in an elevated water tower (20 m3)
  5. Distribution to the public fountains and to private taps by gravity feed.
