The Senegalese littoral, from Dakar to Saint-Louis, also called "La Grande Côte", is swept from November to March by the trade winds. This regular wind stemed from the Azores anticyclone is of north-north-west direction. From April, the equatorial wind, mild and raw, the monsoon, drives back the warm and dry air higher in the North ; the wind abates until October. |
Energy potential
The mean wind speed is about 4.3 m/s in the meteorological station of ASECNA in Saint Louis with seasonal variations, which are quite marked. The months of August and December are few windy.
| But the mean wind speed in the villages is inferior to this measured in Saint Louis and this, for several reasons : these villages are situated lower in the South (the nearer we are to the equator, the lighter the winds are), they are often far from the coastline... and they are sheltered by trees. |
